Alabama State Permits

What once was a state that relied on the production and exportation of agriculture has slowly, but surely, started to invest time in to other industries. Aerospace, health care, banking and automobile manufacturing have all seen reforms.

According to the Alabama Department of Revenue, there are certain permits and licenses that are required for every “person, firm, company or corporation engaged in any business, vocation, occupation or profession.” This license is called a privilege license, and it can be obtained in the county where the business is located. In addition to the privilege license, Alabama requires a sales tax permit for all retail businesses, and furthermore, if you plan on buying products at wholesale prices, then you will be required to obtain a seller’s permit or resale license.

If you are planning on building a new store or simply remodeling the existing one, then you will be required to have a building permits for any construction job. These permits vary by city; so, it is best to check with the city government where construction is being done. However, most local governments require you to have:

  • Sign permits

  • Grading permits

  • Electrical permits

  • Plumbing permits

Permits can be a tricky business; so, do your research before you start building. Many cities require different permits and different ways of obtaining them. For example in Alabama, Birmingham and Montgomery permits are available from different departments. Once you know the ins and outs of each state’s government then you will be well on your way to constructing a new, legal business.
